The Planter Art Project

The challenge: to create a work of art to be displayed in one of the planters along Danforth Avenue between Greenwood & Woodbine.   The planter display can be installed anytime during the week of April 24 – April 30.

Theme: We encourage you to create something that provides personal reflections about life along and near this part of Danforth Avenue.   This theme is a starting point – you can interpret it as you wish!

Here are a few ideas to get you thinking:

  • Create a pile of used plastic bottles and string them together around (but not to) the tree so they cannot be easily removed.
  • Fill the planter with artificial flowers.
  • Tie together abandoned stuffed animals or old toys.
  • Paint branches and stick them into the planters.
  • Visit the dollar store for ideas.
  • Use words or draw pictures.
  • Fill clear bags with leaves.
  • Use found objects.
  • Hunt around the streets during recycling day.
  • If you are a business or organization, use materials that are part of your daily work environment.  NOTE:  store advertising is not allowed (i.e. brochures, store signage) but “hints” of your business are encouraged!

Here are the restrictions:

  • The artwork must not extend beyond the envelope as shown in the attached image.
  • You must not attach the artwork to the tree and must not damage the tree.
  • The artwork may circumvent the tree to reduce vandalism and theft.
  • The artwork must not contain sharp or dangerous objects, elements or materials.
  • The artwork may not be offensive to others.
  • The artwork must be made of material that is durable for a minimum of 10 days.
  • Recycled and recyclable material is preferred.
  • You may gently stake the artwork into the soil around the tree while being careful not to damage roots.
