Open Knowledge Market is a community workshop aiming to advocate the idea of knowledge sharing and mutual education through social participation and mingling in a relaxing, casual environment that embraces a decentralized, horizontal structure.

The two-session workshop (2-3 hours for each session) is designed specifically for Art of the Danforth, targeting community members with a wide range of background. It is an inclusive workshop developed based on the belief that everyone, regardless of age, gender, race, education background etc., has something to teach and that everyone has something that they can learn.

The workshop is inspired by The Bank of Common Knowledge, a project initiated by the Spanish collective Platoniq. In the age of the Internet, P2P file-sharing systems and free software, the transmission of knowledge is more omnipresent than ever. We believe that this mode of self and mutual education is not limited to the online world and that the philosophy of copyleft can be brought to the offline community. We endeavor to generate networks or communities of people with common interests who want to share their resources and knowledge.

Through Open Knowledge Market, participants can offer and request certain knowledge, from facts, oral history and theories to technical skills like knitting or even replacing a lock. Participants can also recommend people who can teach useful or interesting subjects. These informal knowledge exchanges serve as a way to promote knowledge as common goods, and to protect or make public subjects that for various reasons aren't present in the usual education channels or widely available.

We emphasize the inclusiveness of the workshop as it is often a misconception that only the educated possess knowledge and that only those who are officially recognized are entitled or qualified to teach. We prompt to change these mindset as they obstruct free and open knowledge sharing and hence reduce accessibility to knowledge which we believe should be distributed under the copyleft system.

WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN >>

The Open Knowledge Market starts with an on-site survey, researching the interests and knowledge pockets within the community.
Strategies, such as games, are used to map the knowledge supplies and demands. The social tagging game, for example, is based on the folksonomy system of classification popularized by the web 2.0 services. It aims to make visible possible connections and invite participants to engage in conversations and exchanges. All knowledge offers and requests are posted, so people can vote for the most interesting topics.

In the first session of Open Knowledge Market, we target to make the resources brought together by the participants visible and to introduce ways of which one might share the knowledge that they possess. Examples of games, micro-workshops, demos, take-away theory, challenges will be presented to participants as inspirations.

Various methodologies will be employed to facilitate participation and horizontal organization. Situations will be created to encourage active interaction among participants. By the end of the first session, a pool of offers and requests will be accessible to all participants. Participants shall have adequate understanding of the group and will be invited to prepare a 5-15 minutes activity, demonstration or presentation on the topic that they are interested to share about for the next session of workshop.

The second session of Open Knowledge Market will focus on the transmission of knowledge within the community. Participants will take turns to host sessions of knowledge sharing. Public audience are welcome to join these arranged sessions under the condition that they will contribute to the knowledge market by sharing what they know.
To demonstrate the potential growth of a knowledge market, participants are asked to bring a friend who might be able to answer to one or more of the requests collected from the first session. This will double up the participants of the workshop.

Participants can expect to leave the workshop with a delightful collective experience, newly gained knowledge, as well as a network of resourceful friends!

Through participating in the workshop, one can learn whatever that is available in the market, which comprises of resources brought by the community members. While the event serves as an agency, the participants themselves is the content. This model of running the workshop is similar to that of an unconference, in which participants design the agenda and act as both presenters and audience. Open Knowledge Market not only addresses the question of what kinds of knowledge are transferred, but also how the knowledge is transferred. We propose a series of formats that can be useful for different kinds of content. The sessions are recorded in video, archived and published online. However, this online library is not the purpose of the workshop but one of its consequences, while the process and the social interaction is the core of the project.

Yes. We propose to present the materials generated from the workshop (such as the wall of offers and requests) in a space that acts as a free, unmoderated version of the knowledge market where public can contribute as desired. The new contribution will become part of the workshop outcome, which will be the foundation of the Toronto Open Knowledge Market, an online platform that acts as a knowledge bank as well as a social network that facilitates future events and workshops.

As an active advocate of free culture, I initiated and co-curated Wikitopia in 2010, a festival which introduces and promotes knowledge sharing, networked creativity and collaboration. Through the festival which comprised of keynote speeches, panel discussions, screenings, workshops and performances, I fostered discussion around building an ideal social structure using creativity and technology as a power tool. I contributed to the development of the DJ/VJ software jam2jam by hosting workshops of networked jamming encouraging the use of technology in cultivating creativity, as well as collaboration among children and school youths. In addition, I also designed and conducted video and creativity workshops for both students and adults. I am experienced in creating situations that stimulate interaction and participation.

We would like to guide participants through creating a mural that describes our community along Danforth. Murals blend collaboration, history and local communities. Our proposed workshop would take between 2-3 hours and could involve a large or a small number of participants. The mural would be created on a kraft paper roll. This would be completed in one session. Ideally, we would work outside and people could draw, paint and lie down and trace the outline of their body on the paper to insert themselves into the community image that we are creating.

Linette Doherty is a talented and versatile performer who has performed on film and television; on stage and on the radio. Her dance background is diverse – from ballet, modern, lyrical, and contemporary, to hip hop, jazz, tap, and West African styles.

In demand as a teacher and guest artist, Linette encourages her students to develop strong technique and performance skills, along with a genuine love for dance and the arts. In 2004, she opened The S.P.A.C.E., a unique studio where children and adults learn from industry professionals in a warm and supportive atmosphere. Her younger students enjoy Linette’s work as “Dana”, the dance teacher and choreographer in Disney’s Cheetah Girls movie.
